Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of economic risk perception on subjective social status. Whether negative perception of economic risk, which is represented by unemployment, poverty, housing insecurity, financial instability and economic downturn, affect subjective social status is analysed. For the purpose, this paper conducted cross-tabulation test and multinomial logistic regression analysis using Korean General Social Survey (KGSS) 2014 dataset. The results of this study show that the more seriously the economic risk is perceived, the more likely it is to perceive their subjective social status as the lower class. Thus it is not reasonable to point the people's excessively high level of expectation to the main cause of low subjective status. Resolving anxiety about various economic risks through strengthening customized social welfare will be effective in raising low subjective social status of Korean people.
